#6 My ALS Journey—I Surrender All

My mom could not carry a tune. She rarely remembered words to songs. In typical Susan fashion, she would confidently make things up if she didn’t know something.  A very clear memory of mine was from when I was about four years old. She stood in my doorway after tucking me into bed. I used to beg her to sing The Old Rugged Cross every night before I fell asleep, and I received a new rendition of the song every night. I don’t know the real words to this day, but I can still hear my mama singing about Jesus from the bottom of her heart.

Many years ago, as I stood in a church service singing the hymn, “I Surrender All,” I remember thinking those are particularly powerful words, words that should not be sung lightly without thought. “ALL to Jesus I surrender, ALL to Him I freely give…” Over the years, since that Sunday morning, I have been more thoughtful and contemplative when I sing the song, however, the words were easier to sing and say out loud then than they are now. Then I didn’t have ALS.

This morning as I was getting ready for my day the song came to my mind, “ALL to Jesus I surrender all to Him I freely give.” Would I sing the song again? Yes, I will continue to sing the song, I would rather have ALS with Jesus than ALS without Him.
