I think my mom’s joy of buying new shoes for every journey is one of my great joys today. Recently, I completed my Ph.D. (this alone would have made my mom over the moon) and bought a new pair of red loafers—a color she would have loved. I am not a “red” girl, but I laugh whenever I even THINK of the shoes. She would have thought them a party.
She had a theme when she began her blog, Susan’s Steps. She thought it was a funny play on words (Get it? She can’t walk, but she’s taking “steps”) and got a kick out of it that she had to explain her jokes.
This girl was always on the move, even when she couldn’t.

Sometimes you just have to do one thing for fun. This is what I did yesterday. Cliff bought me a new pair of shoes to wear to the ALS “Swanky Summer Soirée.” As I mentioned in my last posting, I was invited to honor the ALS Association as part of the program, which was a privilege for me. A new pair of cute shoes can really perk up your life. Although, okay, they were a little pricey for someone who cannot walk. My grandson Nate laughingly pointed that out to me. I tried to emphasize the mental health component, but I don’t think he was buying it.
There always must be one exciting wheelchair adventure, and last night was no exception. The Elks Building is an older structure. There are steps into the room where the Soirée was held, so…they had a small lift for us wheelchair folks. The problem was when we were getting to leave last night. The lift was not working. There was no way for my great and mighty power chair to make it up the steps. Heading the hunt, my son-in-law, Craig, found a ramp to cover stairs in the room’s rear. Needless to say, I was nervous because it looked to me to be very steep, my guess about 45 degrees. Craig assured me he was right behind me if I started to go backward. With many strong men around me, I put the bike in gear, and up the ramp, we successfully went—the end to a great night.
