#62 My ALS Journey–Almost Normal

Almost every day, Cliff and I are on the move. We do this with intention, primarily because we want to avoid thinking about my condition. I mentioned in an earlier blog that “denial” is one of our favorite words.

We had a busy past three days. On Friday afternoon, Cliff’s sisters and brother-in-law, Bob, came to visit. Two sisters, Millie and Betty, are from the Concord area, and Naomi is visiting from Minnesota. Great fun!

Saturday morning, I shared tea with 13 girlfriends at Tea Anytime in Carmichael (ask me about it if you plan to solicit their business). These ladies bless my heart. I always look forward to being with them.

Saturday afternoon, we were off mattress shopping. We had purchased a new mattress about 14 months ago, but we had some problems with it. Sleep Train sent a mattress inspector to our home, found our mattress was defective, and issued a full refund. We made a new choice, and the mattress will be delivered this week.

Sunday, breakfast with friends in Roseville, and a baby shower for my niece at our house in the afternoon. Thank you, Tricia and the girls, for pulling it together.

All this to say, in the moments I stay involved, engaged, and active, I can almost feel “normal”. Last week, we were going to our ALS Support group meeting, but I wasn’t feeling up to par, so we almost returned home. However, knowing me, I knew once I got inside and was able to be with people, I would feel better, and I did.

Fatigue is a thief, and I have to watch my energy level. I try to conserve my strength to get the most out of what energy I have. Today, Monday, breakfast out with Dave and Arlene Powers.

No plans for the rest of the day. It is good to be home; I feel almost normal.
